People Delivering SSP To Children

For people who are delivering SSP to their children, the same categories for caution apply. Parents start the Protocol first because they need to become a super regulator in their lives to give their kid's nervous system something to co-regulate peacefully with no matter what. The course will teach you how to monitor the nervous system so you can do so for yourself & then your children when the time comes. Parents (One or Both) start their SSP listening journey in the included Zoom Session with me. If you feel comfortable monitoring your child at home after you are through your first round with SSP Core then you can start your child at home. If you want one-to-one support I do sessions but my recommendation is to actually use their existing support teams, therapists, etc. to help monitor them or help them process the experience. I know a mom who introduced co-regulated listenin by simply having her daughter use the Protocol for a few minutes in the parking lot of her dance class and then eventually inside when it was transitioning. before her dance class. Plus, I am also here for email & text support along the way if things come up. For certain medical conditions, as specified in this cautions section, it might be better to have your children monitored more closely by a medical professional live. Perforated or Ruptured Eardrums, Stapedectomy, Tympanostomy tubes

People with perforated or ruptured eardrums, stapedectomy, tympanostomy tubes - Speak with a medical doctor or audiologist first.

People With Misophonia or Hyperacusis

People with misophonia or hyperacusis - Speak with a medical doctor before & during SSP delivery as needed. People with auditory sensitivities like this might want to use speakers first to listen to the SSP music & keep the volume at the lowest comfortable level throughout the entire listening experience.

  • From Unyte Health: Decreasing hearing sensitivity was the original indication for the SSP in the early clinical trials. Misophonic responses are associated with difficulties with emotional regulation (Guetta, et al., 2022). Clients with hearing sensitivity have significant potential to experience benefit, though they may be especially responsive to the volume of the music.

Autoimmune, Neurological, & Chronic Conditions

People with chronic autoimmune & neurological conditions - Please have a medical provider available to speak with as needed & to help monitor chronic medical conditions as the SSP audios create adjustments to the nervous system.

People With Seizures - Not Recommended!

People with seizures - There is the potential to do live one-to-one sessions in office with a medical professional based on your doctor's or neurologist's guidance after seizures have stopped for a specified length of time. Only a licensed doctor with experience with SSP should give you guidance on that. A remote SSP program should not be used unless that doctor feels certain that it is safe to do so.

People With Tinnitus

People with tinnitus - Speak with a medical doctor or audiologist before & during SSP delivery as needed. Depending on the severity of the tinnitus, remote SSP delivery can often still be used if your doctor thinks it's okay. Some things to customize the experience for tinnitus - You'll want to pause the SSP listening session if the tinnitus becomes activated & let your ears rest. Keep the listening times shorter. Keep the music at the lowest comfortable volume during listening. Feel free to listen through speakers instead of headphones as needed. Starting slow & continually monitoring yourself & the volume is important if your doctor gives you the green light. There's been instances where listening to SSP helps with tinnitus especially when done in the slow modified way that is mentioned above.

Bipolar, Borderline, & Dissociative Disorders

People with bipolar, borderline, & dissociative disorders - Speak with a medical doctor before & during SSP delivery as needed. People with these conditions can be particularly sensitive to the way SSP feels so having a doctor on hand that knows your history & you can reach out to as needed is important.

People Who Are Intentionally Self-Harming & Thinking About Suicide

People who are intentionally self-harming & thinking about suicide - Speak with a medical professional or your current one-to-one mental health professional first & during SSP delivery as needed. If they give you the green light, it's recommended that you have regular one-to-one sessions with them so they can help you monitor the changes & feelings that come up throughout your SSP listening journey.

Psychosis, Antipsychotic Medicated, Recent Psychiatric Hospitalizations

People with psychosis, antipsychotic medicated, recent psychiatric hospitalizations - Speak with your current psychiatrist or medical doctor to decide if you should do live one-to-one sessions in office with a doctor you have an established relationship with or if remote SSP delivery is right for you. Often having a practitioner on hand who knows you well is advised so they can help monitor changes while you're on the SSP listening journey.

How Long will the Safe and Sound Protocol Results Last?

  • Some feel the effects during the SSP Music Therapy sessions while others see results more tangibly in how they are responding to life in the 2-6 weeks after.  Most usually notice more self awareness, more calm & more self control within a few weeks of completing their first round of the SSP Core Series.

  • In the Be Well Course that comes with your SSP Subscription, you will also feel the effects of specific meditation, breathing, & mindfulness practices designed to retrain your Default Mode Network in your brain.  Improved mood & reduced stress have been reported immediately following these kinds of meditations & measurable changes in brain regions associated with memory, sense of self, empathy, & stress have been scanned at 8 weeks.

How To Use The Safe and Sound Protocol For People With Anxiety, Childhood Trauma, or CPTSD?

For people with childhood trauma, remember to start slow.  This is a powerful tool & odds are if you experienced trauma, your nervous system is not used to feeling regulated.  In my personal experience working with abuse survivors to change their programming, I noticed that  1) They needed very short bursts to begin with, some as little as 30 seconds morning & night, gradually increasing by 30 seconds every day or few days until they found their optimal listening time.  2) Their systems would shake the recalibration of their neuroception off more quickly.  I think this is because they were likely to have grown up so dependent on dysregulated habits to survive in their childhood environment.  It’s okay to go at your own pace.  It’s not a race.  There is nothing wrong with you.  You are just reprogramming old survival instincts that no longer serve you in this present moment.  Stay as steady & consistent as you can with practices & your system will adapt to what you are asking of it.

Based on the clinical guidelines, you are able to repeat what they call SSP Core every 8 weeks to recalibrate your middle ear muscles & listen to SSP Balance in between as needed.  People without childhood wounds seem to be able to listen to a round of SSP Core with some integration with SSP Balance for a few months & see great results.  People with deeper wounds seem to need SSP Core about every 8 weeks like clock work with SSP Balance in between for more extended periods of time.  That's why we created the SSP Subscription because we realized that while people have gorgeous results using the Safe and Sound Protocol, for some, it is something they need with consistency.  Many people can't afford to pay their clinical therapists for another round of sessions after SSP wears off.  Giving people the skills in this course combined with the low cost monthly SSP Subscription has been our solution to that.

There are different series of Safe and Sound Protocol Music.  The SSP Balance Series is like lifting a lighter weight so it’s what I recommend when people are triggered & want to calm / re-regulate their nervous systems.  It also helps you maintain the regulation you've created from the heavier weight listening of the SSP Core Series.  How long the effects of the Safe and Sound Protocol last depends on the level & habit of dysregulation in your nervous system (inherited from childhood).

We’ve noticed that SSP Therapy is like exercise, if you stop using it for too long your nervous system can slip back into its old programming which is why we recommend a little every night &/or morning.  With time other practices used consistently will hold the "shape" of your nervous system & automatic habits so you can let go of SSP if you want to.  With even more time the way you interact & use your life becomes a walking practice that can also hold the regulation.  This is why we've included other practices & skills in this course so you aren't dependent on any one thing & can retrain your inner systems on multiple levels.  For some of us being healthy, regulated, & happy is like a muscle we need to keep engaging to maintain the way we want to feel & using the Safe and Sound Protocol at home is a great tool for that.
